Rilen is a teenager about to enter a Trial to determine whether he will become a hunter, one of
his village’s protectors. He lacks an ability called Sight that grants people the ability to see
beyond what ordinary eyes perceive. With luck and perseverance, he manages to enter the
Trial without Sight, but soon discovers he’s ill-equipped to be successful. After an encounter
with an Ekrit, the vicious creatures the hunters are meant to kill, Rilen learns he has another
ability called Shaping that lets him see and manipulate the feelings of those around him. With
this new ability, Rilen learns his role in the village is much more important than he could have
imagined.
