Gumdrop Electric is the story of a mother’s reckoning with her lifelong depression and
the anxiety that intensifies after her son has a life-altering encounter with a shark. Reaching back
to the time she was pregnant with her son and navigating through her own childhood on to
the present, the author considers moments of longing, change, motherhood, and
daughterhood.

The author describes pivotal moments in her life that contribute to her depression, including divorce, geographical instability, and erratic family life. After her son leaves home for college, the author begins an MFA program that provides her opportunity to
witness firsthand that art, and the creation of art, is healing and psychologically satisfying.
